Independence Day
Independence Day on August 15th celebrates India's freedom from British colonial rule in 1947. The day holds immense emotional significance as the culmination of a long struggle for self-determination led by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and countless freedom fighters who sacrificed for the nation's liberty.
Traditions
The Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and delivers a nationally televised address. Flag-hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes take place at every school, office, and public space across the country. Kite-flying is a beloved tradition in many states, particularly Gujarat and Punjab.
