German Unity Day
October 3rd is the Tag der Deutschen Einheit, Germany's national day, commemorating the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990. It is the only public holiday established by federal law rather than state law, making it Germany's sole truly national holiday.
Traditions
Official celebrations rotate annually between federal state capitals. A large citizen's festival (Bürgerfest) with stages, exhibitions, and food stalls is held in the host city. The President delivers a speech. Smaller local events and ceremonies take place across the country.
