Poland's Desert That Isn't: The Bledow Sands, the 70C Surface and the Real Fire Risk
The Bledow sands in southern Poland look like a slice of the Sahara, and the bare surface can bake to around 70C in summer. But it is not a true climatic desert, it rains plenty there, and it does not act as a hairdryer drying out the surrounding forests. The real fire risk belongs to the flammable pine forests on sandy soil, managed by Poland's national fire-danger bans.
