Spanjë Climate Overview
Spain has Europe's most diverse climate, ranging from wet oceanic conditions in the northwest to semi-arid desert in the southeast. The central meseta experiences extreme temperature swings between summer and winter. The Mediterranean coast enjoys mild winters and hot summers, while the Canary Islands maintain spring-like temperatures year-round.
Seasonal Patterns
Spring (March–May) is ideal across most of Spain. Summer (June–August) brings intense heat to the interior, with temperatures above 40°C in Andalusia and central Spain. Autumn sees the return of rain, with heavy storms along the Mediterranean coast (gota fría). Winter is mild on the coasts but cold in the interior and mountains.
Weather Considerations
Spain faces increasing drought and desertification in the southeast. The DANA (formerly gota fría) weather phenomenon brings catastrophic flooding to the Mediterranean coast in autumn. Sierra Nevada and the Pyrenees offer skiing from December through April.
